The Virginia Department of Forestry says fall color is beginning to fade in the state’s highest elevations, where many trees have already shed their leaves. Those that remain are showing mostly gold and orange hues, with a growing number of bare branches.
In contrast, lower and mid-elevation areas — from northern Virginia down the Blue Ridge to the North Carolina border — are now reaching their most vibrant point of the season. These regions are glowing with warm tones as the peak of color continues to move downhill.
Foresters remind visitors that “peak” foliage is always a moving target since not all trees change at once. They say there’s still plenty of time to enjoy Virginia’s fall scenery before the season winds down.
