The Fredericksburg City School Board has approved the appointment of Dr. David Ferguson as Director of Operations for Fredericksburg City Public Schools, effective Jan. 28.
According to an announcement of the hire, Ferguson brings more than 22 years of experience in public education with a strong focus on school operations, facilities oversight, safety and security, capital planning, and division-level leadership.
Ferguson most recently served as Principal of Fauquier High School from July 2024 to January 2026, previously serving a decade as Principal of Rappahannock High School from August 2015 through June 2024. From July 2010 through August 2014, he served as Assistant Principal and Adult Apprenticeship-related Instruction Coordinator for Spotsylvania County Public Schools. His leadership in these roles emphasized operational efficiency, safe and well-maintained learning environments, and long-term planning to support student success.
In addition to his work as a school leader, Ferguson served as Director of Special Education for Richmond County Public Schools from August 2014 to 2015, where he collaborated closely with operations, transportation, and maintenance departments to ensure regulatory compliance, accessibility, and safe instructional environments across multiple campuses.
Ferguson holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Virginia Tech and maintains a Virginia Division Superintendent License. He holds a Master of Science in Educational Administration from the University of Scranton and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Special Education from Misericordia University.
“With 22 years of experience in education, managing school operations, leading capital projects, improving facilities, and planning for long-term sustainability, I’m ready to bring that same, steady, hands-on approach to Fredericksburg City Public Schools,” Ferguson stated in a news release.
“Dr. Ferguson brings a rare combination of instructional leadership experience and deep operational expertise,” Superintendent Marci Catlett said in the announcement. “His understanding of facilities, safety, and long-range planning, paired with his commitment to students and staff, will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our learning environments and support the needs of our growing division.”
As Director of Operations, Ferguson will oversee facilities, maintenance, transportation, health and safety, and capital planning efforts, ensuring that FCPS schools remain safe, efficient, and well-equipped to support teaching and learning.
