This free lecture given by Julia A. DeLancey, Ph.D., Professor of Art History, UMW, will focus on the Piazza San Marco as a Renaissance public space, exploring just a few of the ways Venetians designed, maintained, and altered it to make public points about Venetian political and social power. It will also explore the ways those not in power used the piazza to advance their own aims, as well as some of the early 21st century threats to the piazza’s survival including from overtourism and climate change.
