6 Back-to-School Tips for Beating Acne

by | Dec 13, 2014 | Business, Health & Wellness

As the back-to-school season approaches and stress levels increase, teens are even more likely to develop acne, said Crystal Wellman, a Master Aesthetician and owner of Crystal Clear Acne Clinic in Fredericksburg.

“Most teenagers’ acne clears up in the summer months when their stress levels decrease and they spend more time outdoors,” Wellman said.  As the fall semester approaches, Wellman recommends these six tips to reduce acne:

Don’t Touch. Your hands touch everything and carry thousands of germs.  When you touch your face, you spread the germs on your skin, which will lead to clogged pores and acne. Constantly touching a pimple will elongate the healing time and can actually spread the acne across your face.

Don’t Pop your Pimples. Bacteria are contained in that pesky acne spot and popping it can spread the bacteria to other pores, causing more acne. It’s best to be patient or leave popping pimples to a professional.

Wash After Exercise. As sports season and gym classes start up, you’re producing more sweat. Sweat irritates the pores, leading to an increased rate of acne, so be sure to take a shower or, at the very least, wipe off your face immediately after exercising.

Gently Exfoliate: Washing your face twice daily is highly recommended, especially for teenagers. A common mistake, however, is to over-wash your face with harsh chemicals and scrubs, leading to irritated skin and even more acne. Use a gentle exfoliation and toner for optimal skin care.

Eat Healthy. It’s not an easy feat for a high school or college student, but eating certain foods can help prevent clogged pores.  Avoid refined grains and milk products to keep your skin healthy.

Drink Plenty of Water. Skin heals faster if it is properly hydrated.
