Art of Balance Yoga Studio Valentine’s Day Grand Opening

Art of Balance Yoga Studio is hosting a grand opening celebration on Saturday, Feb. 14. Sign-up online for a free 10:30 a.m. yoga class. “If you can’t make the class or if it fills up, come by at noon for a raffle drawing, refreshments and time to get to know the teachers and your fellow yoga practitioners,” said studio owner Lili Robins. Art of Balance Yoga Studio is located at 4300 Plank Rd., Suite 170, in Fredericksburg.

Robins answered a few questions about the studio and the instructors.

Tell us a little about each teacher.

I [Lili Robins] began teacher training at Healing Arts in Fredericksburg in 2010 and earned a 200 certification. The training style is Hatha and the lineage is Integral Yoga. She worked at Sport & Health in Stafford teaching Body Flow by Les Mills and then eventually just taught yoga. After moving to Fredericksburg, she began teaching at American Family Fitness, Fly Fitness and Creative Movement, and worked for Dragonfly as a sub and with their outreach program, Dragonfly Yoga Project. In April 2014 she began an advanced training in Yoga Therapy. She will have her 500 hour certification in April 2015.

Jennifer Martin studied Power Vinyasa Yoga, Alignment based yoga and Ashtanga Yoga, then in 2007 she began her teacher training at Health Advantage Yoga Center. She received her 200 hour instructor certification in 2008, and is registered with Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT. She also completed the Radient Child trainings, level 1 and level 2, and is a certified personal trainer with the American Council on Exercise (ACE), a certified group exercise instructor with Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and a certified spinning instructor. She also teaches at Sport & Health and Fitness 1440.

Bindi Pathak, like Lili, received her yoga teacher training through Healing Arts and has her 200 hour certification. She has a passion for meditation and has studied it under various teachers and styles for the past several years, and most recently she has undertaken Meditation Stress Reduction (MBSR) from John Mclaughlin. Bindi also teaches at Sport & Health and American Family Fitness.

Michelle Etcho received her 200RYT from Heal Me Institute in Bowling Green, Va.. She also teaches Vinyasa style and power classes at American Family Fitness and Dragonfly Yoga Fredericksburg.

Terry Hudson is a Pilates and yoga teacher. She earned a Pilates specialty certification in 2012 from NETA. She has a Group X certification from AFFA and a Fitness and Nutrition specialty certification through U.S. Career Institute. She will receive her 200 hour certification next month from Susan Van Nuys of Health Advantage Yoga Center.

Why did you decide to open a yoga studio?

I began thinking about opening a studio a while back, but then the idea rekindled during my training in yoga therapy at Beloved Yoga in Reston, Va. I have been learning new tools there that can be used in group classes or one-on-one that can really help people find more ease in their daily activities. I felt that a longer class was required, and so I have begun our schedule with all classes going 75 minutes. Eventually we will add 90 minute classes. All of us had taught 60 minute classes for years thinking how nice it would be to make them go just a little longer, to take the rush out of the practice and have more time for breath work and deep relaxation at the end. By opening a Yoga space on Plank Road, I hope to serve people living further west of the highway who need a convenient location that doesn’t take them out of their way.

There are many new exercise and yoga studios open/opening in the area. What makes yours different? What would you tell people to help them decide to choose your studio and your classes?

Our primary goal is not exercise, although that is a lovely side benefit to practicing yoga. We hope to help each student overcome some of the physical and mental limitations they may have in order to bring more balance and ease to the body and mind, to use breath work to gain a deeper understanding of that connection, and for each person to leave class feeling better than when they came in.

This is a comfortable, non-competitive space where the emphasis is on the practice, not attaining the full expression of any pose. With regular, steady practice comes strength, flexibility, balance, and a feeling of peace and contentment. There are Basics classes and more demanding Vinyasa classes, so people can start at the beginning knowing nothing at all about yoga and gradually transition when they feel ready to do more complex poses.
