Germanna Community College (GCC) has banned the use of electronic, clove and herbal cigarettes in campus buildings and within 25 feet of entrances and exits. GCC’s Local College Board voted March 19 to add these to the school’s already existing ban on tobacco smoking.
Dr. Jeanne Wesley, GCC’s Vice President for Workforce, told the board that there have been complaints about students vaping.
A heating element powered by a battery atomizes a flavored liquid solution that often includes nicotine, explained Michael Zitz, GCC director of Media & Community Relations. Some find the smell offensive. “According to Americans for Nonsmokers Rights, 587 U.S. campuses banned vaping as of January 1, 2015,” Zitz said.
“While many believe use of e-cigarettes to be healthier than tobacco, there’s debate about whether it’s safe,” said Germanna President David A. Sam.
