Snowfall has ended across the Fredericksburg District, allowing Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews to focus today on removing snow from Interstate 95 and primary roads to improve travel conditions and open additional lanes.

Sunday morning, Jan. 24, 2016, motorists will find snow covers most of Interstate 95 and primary roads. Lower-volume secondary roads and subdivision streets are in severe condition, with total snow coverage and may be partially blocked.

Plows and heavy equipment will work Sunday to open additional travel and turn lanes on main roads that carry heavy traffic. Crews will also continue clearing snow that has accumulated on road shoulders and at intersections. Until this work is complete, motorists will encounter a reduced number of lanes on main roads and limited sight distance.

Once major roads are in better condition, crews can focus more on secondary and subdivision streets. Crews are expected to make at least one pass on these over the next few days. Crews have been able to make some initial passes on many secondary roads this weekend.

Despite the improving weather, motorists are urged to remain off the roads today. This will give crews space to perform the extensive snow removal and cleanup required.

What Residents Should Know

· Despite the improved weather, motorists are advised to stay off the roads today. Crews need additional time to plow snow and open up travel lanes and turn lanes.

· Residents may not see bare pavement on the initial pass of the snowplow. A snowplow will remove the bulk of snow across the road to create a path to help vehicles exit their neighborhood.

VDOT crews are working 24 hours a day to clear streets and apply sand, salt, and treatment materials. Nearly 1,000 pieces of equipment are circulating in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula.
