Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park will begin repair work April 2, 2016, on damage inflicted by vandals to historic Salem Church. The work will continue through the summer of 2016.
On the evening of October 2, 2015, vandals smashed several windows on the ground floor of Salem Church, causing extensive damage assessed at nearly $35,000, according to Brian Dendis, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park chief of maintenance.
The investigation continues, but to date no arrests have been made.
Old Salem Church was built in 1844 and is now managed by the National Park Service. On May 3, 1863, during the Chancellorsville Campaign, Union and Confederate troops clashed on the lands around the church, leaving the building with scars that are still visible. The National Park preserves the church, an acre of ground surrounding it, and several monuments on the grounds.
