Republican Dave Brat won a second term serving as U. S. Congressman in Virginia’s 7th District. He posted the following statement on Facebook:

“Tonight I want to thank God and all of the constituents in the seventh district for electing me to another two years of service, and I take this service seriously. We have very difficult problems to solve going forward and it is not time to sugarcoat these problems, and so we must all unite around the things that have made us great, including the Judeo Christian tradition, the rule of law and the free market system.

“I especially want to reach out to my African-American and Hispanic brothers and sisters because we all share the Judeo-Christian tradition and its first principles in common, and so I want to particularly reach out to those who need help and assure them that I will fight for their families to make sure that we find jobs and create an excellent and relevant education for all children so that we can all share in the same success and American dream. Thanks again and God bless!”

With 99.57 percent of the precincts reporting, Brat had 58.05 percent of the vote to 41.77 percent for Eileen M. Bedell (D), according to the Virginia Department of Elections. Write-in accounted for 0.19 percent.

Prior to his election to Congress, Brat was a professor at Randolph–Macon College.

In 2014, Brat ousted then House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the Republican primary for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District. He then defeated Democratic nominee Jack Trammell, a fellow professor at Randolph-Macon College, and Libertarian nominee James Carr on November 4, 2014.

Virginia’s 7th Congressional District is located in the central portion of the state, and includes Spotsylvania, Culpeper, Orange, Louisa, Hanover, Richmond City and New Kent counties.
