The Wounded EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) Warrior Foundation’s Eighth Annual Polar Bear Plunge was held Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, at City Dock in downtown Fredericksburg. Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw and Representative Rob Wittman (VA-1) welcomed participants.

Costumed groups paraded before a panel of judges, before lining up on the City Dock boat launch at the edge of the Rappahannock River.

Team Red, White & Blue Fredericksburg, a community of veterans, military and civilians who meet together through physical fitness and social activities, was one of the largest groups participating. Community Directors Andy and Neidra Sampson told members if more than 50 registered, they would dress in any costume chosen by the group’s Community Outreach Director Margaret Clevenger. Thus Andy, pictured in the blue dress and blonde wig, was Elsa. Neidra was Olaf.

The sun broke through the clouds just as participants began entering the water at 11 a.m.

Proceeds from the event benefit the EOD Warrior Foundation, a non-profit providing assistance to active duty and veteran EOD warriors who are wounded, injured or ill, and to families of wounded and fallen EOD warriors. The organization also maintains the EOD Memorial Wall at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
