Valentine’s Day is known for gifts of candy, cards, and flowers. While a bouquet of cut flowers is a wonderful expression of love and appreciation, I suggest giving a lasting gift of a flowering plant.

It occurred to me that a Valentine garden might be an interesting take on a theme garden. Below is a list of what I think of when it comes to flowers of the heart.

So, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways…with these flowering plants that can grow a garden of perennial love.

– Bleeding Heart: Compassion, Eternal Love

– Calla Lily: Faith, Beauty, Innocence

– Forget-Me-Nots: True Love, Remembrance

– Hydrangea: Heartfelt, Honest, Thankful

– Iris: Hope, Faith, Passion

– Holly: Domestic Happiness

– Lavender: Purity, Devotion, Calm

– Lilac: First Love, Innocence

– Lily: Passion, Fertility

– Lily of the Valley: Sweetness, Purity, Chastity

– Peony: Romantic Love, Beauty

– Roses: Love, Passion, Devotion

– Tulips: Perfect Love, Passion

– Violets: Loving Thoughts, Remembrance
