The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center board of directors voted unanimously during the group’s retreat to drop cultural center from the name.

The institution will now be known as the Fredericksburg Area Museum, or FAM.

The organization also redesigned its logo.

“We will continue to host cultural events at the museum and in adjacent Market Square, but the new name better reflects our primary mission in the community,” said Fredericksburg Area Museum President and CEO Sara Poore.

Poore said the organization’s new acronym, FAM, also reflects the museum’s intent to become a welcoming destination for the entire family.

Fredericksburg-based Higashi Glaser Design donated the new branding and logo. The logo can be changed with varying images, reflecting the museum’s changing exhibits, Poore said.

“We recognize the museum is at the heart of Fredericksburg, and we are committed to its success,” said Byron Glaser. “Due to the circumstances the museum has found itself in, Sandra [Higashi] and I felt obliged to offer our services as a gift to the community.”

The museum suspended operations in 2015, due to financial problems. It consolidated into one building, and auctioned the McKann Center to pay debts.

“We hope the new identity and direction will inspire new energy and awareness, and that the museum will continue to flourish for years to come,” Glaser said.

Museum staff will work with City of Fredericksburg staff and the Architectural Review Board to install new signs, banners, and flags at its home at 907 Princess Anne St.

FAM is currently open Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hours will be extended after the museum’s grand opening, scheduled for April 22, 2017.
