Ten people were laid off Monday, April 3, 2017, from The Free Lance-Star and its commercial printing operation Print Innovators.

The lay-offs were among a total of 289 jobs eliminated nationwide by BH Media Group, the newspaper division of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., and parent company of The Free Lance-Star. Of those cuts, 108 were vacant positions.

Cuts were made to reduce costs associated with declining advertising and circulation revenue, BH Media Group reported.

Free Lance-Star Publisher Dale Lachniet said in the paper that Monday’s announcement will also result in some format changes in the upcoming weeks.

BH Media Group owns 31 dailies and nearly 50 weekly newspapers. Eight of those dailies are in Virginia, and include The Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Culpeper Star-Exponent. Cuts were also reported at those papers.
