From the Virginia Department of Transportation

A new section of Mary Washington Boulevard in Fredericksburg will open to traffic on Friday, April 21, 2017.

Starting Friday afternoon, motorists can use the extended Mary Washington Boulevard to travel between Fall Hill Avenue and Route 1.

Stay alert for mobile, single lane closures on Fall Hill Avenue between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., as construction crews paint final pavement markings and remove construction barrels to open travel lanes.

What Motorists Need to Know
Mary Washington Boulevard intersects with Fall Hill Avenue in a roundabout, which is also fully opening to traffic April 21.

Through traffic on Mary Washington Boulevard will be free flowing, which means Mary Washington Boulevard traffic will not stop at the Sam Perry Boulevard and Hospital Drive intersections.

Message boards are posted on Fall Hill Avenue, Hospital Drive, and Mary Washington Boulevard to alert drivers to this change. Law enforcement officials will be present to assist with traffic control in the work zone.

Online diagrams on the project page demonstrate how drivers can navigate the new roundabout from each approach, whether traveling from Fall Hill Avenue, downtown Fredericksburg, or Mary Washington Boulevard:

– Traffic traveling to I-95 and Central Park area

– Traffic traveling to downtown Fredericksburg

– Traffic traveling to hospital campus and Route 1

Project Background
Construction began in February 2015 to widen Fall Hill Avenue to four lanes with a raised median from Carl D. Silver Parkway to just west of the bridge over the Rappahannock Canal.

The project extended Mary Washington Boulevard to connect with Fall Hill Avenue in a roundabout west of the Rappahannock Canal bridge.

Periodic lane closures will be required in the work zone as crews work to complete final tasks. Additional project details can be found online at Fall Hill Avenue Widening and I-95 Bridge Replacement
