Sunshine Baseball League registration ends May 15

The youth baseball league founded in 2015 by Doris Buffett in Fredericksburg is about to begin its third season.
Buffett funded the construction of Sunshine Ballpark at Bragg Hill.
“I love to see kids learning to do team things,” Buffett said in 2015. “The whole idea is to keep them busy, happy and learning something. They won’t be as likely to fall prey to bad characters.”
May 15 is the deadline for registration for the Sunshine Baseball League’s summer 2017 Minor League (boys and girls age 8-10) and Major League (boys and girls age 11-13) and its Sunshine Baseball Academy (boys and girls age 5-7 weekly from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays). It’s open to kids across the region.
Major and Minor League play will include 14 games plus playoffs from early July through August.
Scholarships are available for those with financial need.
“Sunshine Ballpark provides an excellent family environment with plenty of positive reinforcement,” said Sunshine Baseball League Commissioner Ken Rigby. “It’s a beautiful ballpark with a large electronic scoreboard, P.A. announcing of lineups and batters, music between innings, good coaching and great umpires.”
“The idea is to bring kids from all parts of the area and all walks of life together to become friends, learn the game and have good, clean fun with positive role models,” said Fred Jerman, a league board member.
“It’s a labor of love,” said Sunshine Ballpark manager Bill Lynch, who works full time as a volunteer at the park, watching over the children there. “Kids need this kind of support more now than ever, and it’s very satisfying helping Doris deliver that support.”
