Spotsylvania, VA – Virginia State Police Trooper L.L. Batten Jr. is investigating a crash in Spotsylvania County involving a bicycle and passenger vehicle that occurred Sept. 23, 2017, at 5:01 p.m., on Route 3, approximately 20 feet west of Route 688.

A 2005 Lexus was traveling west on Route 3 and was legally crossing through the intersection with traffic when a bicycle rode north across the westbound lanes of traffic.

A vehicle traveling to the left of the Lexus was able to brake just in time and avoid striking the bicycle as it crossed from the median. However, that vehicle obstructed the view of the Lexus’ driver who didn’t see the bicyclist in time. The Lexus struck the bicycle.

The bicyclist, a 12-year-old Spotsylvania, Va., male, was transported to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The driver of the Lexus, a 56-year-old Spotsylvania, Va., male, was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seat belt.

No charges will be placed.
