How to Know Which iPhone Device Model You Have

by | May 3, 2019 | Experimac, Partners, Technology

Unlike the branding, every single iPhone device has its own model number. Although this is not information that is commonly needed, it is helpful to learn as much as you can about your specific iPhone device so that the device can be as functional as you need it to be. To locate your iPhone device’s model number, go to Settings > General > About. Scroll down through the list and locate “Model.” Simply tap that model button to view the iPhone part number. Within the model section, there is an identifier that starts with M (on some models, it will begin with LL/A). Click on Model and it will show another identifier that begins with A which is a five-digit alphanumeric code. There are situations where the code begins with the letter N which indicates that the model is a replacement unit. Additionally, “M” indicates “retail unit.” Both of these codes are used to identify specific details about an iPhone device. You can also look for the model number within your device. On iPhone 8® or later devices, the model number can be found when the SIM tray is removed. The model number is in the SIM tray slot which can be tricky to see, so check for this in a well-lit area. On iPhone 7 or earlier models (also, the iPad® tablet and the iPod Touch® device), the model number is printed on the back of your device. If you are not sure of a particular iPhone device’s model name (SE, 6, 7, X, etc.), it can be located through the iTunes® program. Connect the iPhone device to a computer and open the iTunes program. Open the “Summary” tab to learn the model name of your iPhone device. This function does not list your specific model code or number (M, N, etc.), but does supply general information. Once you have determined your iPhone device’s model name and the specific model code or number, you will be able to learn more details about your phone. This can be beneficial when assessing the full capabilities of a device as model-specific information is available throughout the web. If you are having trouble figuring out your iPhone device’s model name or model number, your local Experimac techs can surely be of assistance.
