From VDOT:

Since closing Chatham Bridge over the Rappahannock River to traffic nearly one month ago, on June 22, crews with project contractor Joseph B. Fay have gotten to work with urgency.

Demolition of the bridge deck is around 50 percent complete, with several weeks of demolition to go, weather permitting. At the same time, another crew is building a causeway below the bridge, which is a temporary gravel extension that will allow equipment to travel from the riverbanks out to the bridge span. Causeway work is intensifying now that our environmental team has completed the scheduled relocation of river mussels near the bridge as part of the project’s environmental commitment.

River users are asked to please follow direction from the buoys placed in the river to navigate the work zone and pass beneath the bridge.

Thank you to the pedestrians respecting the work zone fencing and barriers on both bridge approaches in Stafford County and downtown Fredericksburg. The area has been closed for your safety! We’re hard at work to deliver on deadline and reopen the bridge to traffic in October 2021.
