In its twelfth grant cycle, The Community Foundation’s Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Fund has awarded $21,903 to seven regional nonprofits. This funding will support organizations that are working to promote recreation opportunities in the community, benefit our region’s youth and advance local historic/cultural preservation.
PRESERVATION
Dahlgren Heritage Foundation
Dahlgren Heritage Museum Enhanced Virtual Presence Initiative (EVPI)
$3,500
This grant award will provide funding for student interns who will help support the goals of the organization’s 2022-2026 Strategic Plan. This plan addresses ways The Dahlgren Heritage Foundation can emerge from COVID stronger and better positioned to engage and expand their audience and leave a legacy for future generations.
Washington Heritage Museums
Masonry Restoration of Stone Step at the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop

WHM will use funds to restore the stone steps on the south (left) side of the Hugh Mercer Apothecary
Shop. The restoration is necessary due to the natural deterioration of the stone and a previous repair that
hastened the deterioration of the stone. The Apothecary steps are used by schoolchildren and other large
groups when exiting the building.
Manarc Borne The Battle
Old Mill Park/Heritage Trail Outdoor Fitness Gym
$3,000 (Conditional)
Funding will go to support the construction of an outdoor fitness gym at Old Mill Park next to the River
Heritage Trail. Five fitness stations will be located in the park near the asphalt walkway that connects to
the Heritage Trail. The grant will be made on the condition that MANARC raise matching funds.
RECREATION
Special Olympics Virginia
Return to Play for Athletes with Intellectual Disabilities + Increased Fitness Opportunities
$1,500
Funds will support the Basketball Championships. More than 140 basketball athletes in the Rappahannock
region typically participate in the season, with 80+ attending the statewide competition. Through sports,
the community will learn to be more inclusive of people with differences.
YOUTH
Imagination Library-Tabernacle UMC
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library-Spotsylvania

The Imagination Library is a premier book gifting program that mails a book a month to registered children
from the time they are born until the month the child turns five years old. The program is provided at no
cost to the families regardless of race, language, economic status, etc. The only eligibility criteria for the
program; age (birth to 5) and residence in one of the Spotsylvania zip codes, focusing on 22553.
Rappahannock Area Office on Youth
Expanding Horizons at Chaplin
$7,000
The Office on Youth’s Residential Services consists of a single group home – Chaplin Youth Center (CYC).
Founded in 1993 as a joint effort between Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Fredericksburg, it is a licensed,
twenty-four-hour, co-ed, 12-bed community based residential facility serving youth ages 12-17. Youth
placed at Chaplin have identified legal, behavioral, substance use or mental health issue that has
necessitated an out of home placement. Funds will be used to renovate a play court and purchase sports
equipment to allow youth to foster healthy, responsible behaviors that promote their future success.
Reach Out And Read Inc
Reach Out and Read programs in Rappahannock River Region
$3,500
Reach Out and Read is the only national pediatric literacy model endorsed by the American Academy of
Pediatrics. When fully funded with adequate book supplies, program support (already in place), and
trained providers, parents are more than two times as likely to read to their children, childrenÊs language
development accelerates by 3-6 months, and families are 2.5 times more likely to enjoy reading together
or have books in the home. Funds will be used to purchase books.
