From Mary Washington Healthcare:

Mary Washington Hospital is five-star rated for total knee replacement and total hip replacement according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting doctors and patients. These five-star ratings reflect Mary Washington Hospital’s dedication to delivering superior clinical outcomes for total knee replacement and total hip replacement and distinguishes Mary Washington Hospital as one of the nation’s leading hospitals for specialty care. Mary Washington Hospital received the Five-Star Distinction for Total Knee Replacement for seven years in a row (2017-2023) and Five-Star Distinction for Total Hip Replacement for eight years in a row (2016-2023).

“The continued excellence of Mary Washington Hospital’s joint replacement program is evidence of the dedication and quality of our physicians and clinical staff,” said Mike McDermott, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mary Washington Healthcare.

Healthgrades evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 31 common conditions and procedures at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide to identify the top-performing hospitals for total knee replacement and total hip replacement. This year’s analysis revealed significant variation in patient outcomes between five-star hospitals and one-star hospitals. From 2019 through 2021, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to five-star hospitals, on average, 201,586 lives could potentially have been saved, and 160,498 patients could have avoided potential complications. *

Additionally, from 2019-2021, patients treated for total knee replacement in hospitals with five-stars have, on average, a 77.3 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated by hospitals with one-star. *

“We commend Mary Washington Hospital for their ongoing commitment to providing high-quality care to patients undergoing total knee and total hip replacement,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science at Healthgrades. “Consumers can feel confident that hospitals with five-star ratings by Healthgrades have demonstrated their ability to deliver consistently exceptional outcomes.”
