On this date-January 14-The founder of modern oceanography was born in Spotsylvania in 1806. Matthew Fontaine Maury is nicknamed “Pathfinder of the Seas.” Bricks from his home are still visible off McLaws Drive near the Chancellorsville Battlefield.
