From Radiologic Associates of Fredericksburg

Edwin W. “Ed” Swager has retired as Chief Executive Officer of Radiologic Associates of Fredericksburg (RAF), the largest provider of radiology and vascular surgery services in the region, and its related companies including Virginia Medical Imaging. He led the practice’s strategic, financial, administrative, and corporate operations for more than 23 years and has been essential to its growth and commitment to excellence, said Dr. Christopher Meyer, President of RAF. During Swager’s tenure, the practice expanded locations served, launched several imaging and medical facilities, introduced important and innovative services to the region—including new interventional radiology treatments and diagnostic and women’s imaging services—and nearly tripled the size of its team of physicians, who today offer expertise in every major subspecialty of radiology.

“Ed assured access to high-quality, lower-cost medical imaging services in our region, as well as to interventional radiology and vascular surgery treatments. He is a deeply admired, highly effective leader whose work has made a lasting impact on our practice and on the communities we serve. We are forever grateful to Ed, and he will be greatly missed,” added Dr. Meyer, a board-certified, fellowship-trained diagnostic radiologist.

Swager’s many achievements include his contributions toward:

·         The transformation of Medical Imaging of Fredericksburg (MIF), which is owned by RAF and Mary Washington Healthcare, into a large multi-modality imaging center, and the development of several other medical imaging and interventional and vascular service offices.

·         Implementation of new technologies at the time, including Digital Imaging and PACS.

·         The formation and expansion of Virginia Interventional & Vascular Associates (VIVA), including the addition of vascular surgeons.

·         The conception and development of the Imaging Center for Women.

·         The launch of 3D mammography and lung screening and cardiac screening programs.

·         MIF’s designation over the years as a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.

He spent more than two decades as RAF’s CEO in a career in radiology spanning 40 years. As he prepared the practice for his retirement, Swager served as chief advisory services officer for RAF’s board of directors during the leadership transition and led the recruitment of Ian Gass, who recently joined RAF as its new CEO.
