PHOTOS: 161 years ago today: The Battle of Fredericksburg

At noon, the Union assault on the Confederate forces on Marye’s Heights began.  Wave after wave of Federal attackers were mown down by Confederate troops firing from a strong position in a sunken road protected by a stone wall.  No Union soldier gets within 100 feet of the wall.  By evening 6,500 Union troops lay dead and dying.
