Area road work this week

Exit 126 (Spotsylvania)

Sunday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Single lane closures on both I-95 northbound and southbound starting at 9 p.m. followed by double lane closures at 10 p.m. between mile markers 125-126 for bridge work. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Exit 130 (Route 3) to Exit 133 (Route 17)

Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. Single lane closure for the I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing work.

Exit 140 (Stafford) to 143 (Aquia/Garrisonville)

Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Single lane closure for sign work at mile marker 142.

Exit 148 (Quantico)

Monday – Friday, 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. Double lane closure for 95 Express Lanes work between mile markers 147 – 146.

Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) to Exit 133 (Route 17)

Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. Single lane closure between mile markers 136-134 for 95 Express Lanes work.

Exit 133 (Route 17) Off-Ramp Closure

Monday – Friday, Midnight – 3 a.m. I-95 southbound off-ramp to Route 17 northbound toward Warrenton will close each evening. Signs will guide drivers along detour route.

Exit 126 (Spotsylvania)

Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. Alternating single lane closures on the I-95 southbound off-ramp to Route 1.

Exit 118 (Thornburg) to Exit 110 (Ladysmith)

Monday – Wednesday, 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. Double lane closure at mile markers 116-115 to allow crews to conduct routine safety inspection of the Paige Road bridge over I-95.

Route 1 Southbound

Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Single lane closure for permit work between Jericho Road/Rogers Clark Boulevard and Route 689 (Oxford Road) and between Route 613 (Zion Road and Route 689 (Oxford Road).

Route 14

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Lane closures with one-way, alternating traffic as needed on Route 14 between the Route 360 and the Route 14/33 intersection. Mobile work zone to replace lenses in pavement markers.

Norris Bridge (Route 3)

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Route 3 over the Rappahannock River will be reduced to a single lane on a portion of the bridge. Expect brief daytime delays. Automated flagging devices will direct traffic through the work zone. Flagging crew members operate the devices, which can be rapidly adjusted to respond to congestion or incidents on the bridge.

Middlesex County

Route 17 Northbound

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Single lane closure for guardrail repair at the Dragon Run Bridge, which is located between Route 198 (Glenn’s Road) and Route 17 Business.

Route 1 Southbound

Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Single lane closure between the I-95 southbound off-ramp and Southpoint Parkway for construction.

Route 2/17 (Tidewater Trail)

Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Single lane closure near Old Farm Road for permit work.

Route 3 Westbound

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Right turn lane closed near Meadows Farms for permit work between Single Oak Road and Five Mile Road.

Route 17 (Mills Drive) at I-95

Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Traffic shift and temporary traffic pattern. Alternating lane closures. Starting on Wednesday, Feb. 28, traffic on southbound Route 17 will be shifted slightly to the right to cross a new overpass of I-95 that is under construction. Traffic will remain in this pattern until construction is complete on the road widening and bridge replacement project. Travel lanes are shifting to provide construction crews space to finish building the median of the new four-lane interstate overpass. Northbound Route 17 traffic will continue to cross the original I-95 overpass.

Route 608 (Massaponax Church Road)

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Alternating one-way traffic between Route 1 and Hall Industrial Drive for permit work.

Route 608 (Benchmard Road)

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Alternating one-way traffic near Route 2/17 intersection for permit work.

Route 617 (Hams Ford Road)

Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. – 4 p.m. Alternating one-way traffic between Morris Road and Ford Road for paving.

Route 628 (Smith Station Road)

Wednesday, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Alternating one-way traffic between Route 208 and Foster Road for shoulder repairs.

Route 632 (Hickory Ridge Road)

Monday – Tuesday, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Alternating one-way traffic between Massaponax Church Road and Route 1 for shoulder repairs.

Route 1 Southbound

Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. Single lane closure between Little Forest Church Road and Woodstock Lane. Utility work under permit. This work will be underway at this location on weekdays through early April 2024.

Route 3 (Kings Highway) Flyover Ramp Closure

Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Flyover ramp bridge to Blue Gray Parkway will close each evening for maintenance work. Passenger vehicles will be detoured to continue eastbound on Route 3 and U-turn at Ferry Road to Route 3 westbound to access Blue Gray Parkway. Trucks are advised to use the following detour route, which will be posted:

• Route 607 (Cool Springs Road)
• Route 3 eastbound

Route 3 (Kings Highway)

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Single westbound lane closed between Route 668 (Little Falls Drive) and Route 713 (Federal Drive) for permit work.

Route 17 Northbound

Sunday – Friday, 7 p.m. – 6 a.m. Alternating single lane closures on Route 17 northbound between Short Street and Sanford Drive for construction.

Route 17 Southbound

Sunday – Friday, 8 p.m. – 6 a.m. Alternating single lane closures on Route 17 southbound between Short Street and Sanford Drive for construction.

Route 610 (Garrisonville Road)

Sunday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Alternating single lane closures on the Route 610 westbound bridge over I-95 for maintenance.

Route 652 (Truslow Road)

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Alternating one-way traffic near Route 615 for permit work.

Route 684 (Mine Road)

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Alternating one-way traffic between Greenspring Drive and Highpointe Boulevard for permit work.

Caroline County

Route 1 over South River Bridge Rehabilitation

Construction is substantially complete on a $4 million project to rehabilitate the Route 1 bridge over the South River, which is located in the Ladysmith area. The project improved the condition of the 97-year-old bridge through substructure and superstructure repairs, and installation of a new concrete travel surface. All four lanes of Route 1 have reopened.

Route 2

Temporary traffic signals on Route 2 at the bridge over Bowie’s Pond are directing one-way, alternating traffic for a bridge maintenance project. Route 2 traffic will remain in this work zone pattern through spring 2024. Read the news release here.

Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) Widening

Construction is substantially complete to widen Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) to four lanes between I-95 and just west of Route 1, with all new travel lanes open. Final construction activities are underway. All work will be complete by May 2024.

Route 628 (Dorrell Road/Spring Cottage Road) Bridge Closure

Dorrell Road/Spring Cottage Road is closed at the bridge over the Mattaponi River, located at the King and Queen and King William county line. The road will remain closed until spring 2025. A bridge superstructure replacement project is under design and will be advertised for construction in spring 2024. The bridge closed for motorist safety in March 2023 after a routine inspection found significant deterioration in key bridge elements. Motorists should follow signs posted along the detour route.

Route 604 (Herring Creek Road)

Herring Creek Road is closed to through traffic between Route 628 (Dorrell Road) and Route 600 (W. River Road) through early March 2024. Crews are addressing bridge scour, which is the erosion of soil around a bridge’s foundation. Addressing the scour improves the bridge condition and ensures it remains open to carry vehicles of all weights. Motorists should follow signs posted along the detour route.

Route 629 (Jacks Creek Road)

A portion of Jacks Creek Road is closed through mid-Feb. 2024 for the installation of a concrete box culvert. The project is replacing the existing culvert, which consists of three corrugated metal drainage pipes built in 1943. A detour is in place.

Route 637 (County Bridge Road)

County Bridge Road is closed to through traffic at the bridge over Cat Point Creek due to damage following heavy rain and flooding in summer 2021. A bridge replacement is under construction. County Bridge Road will remain closed to through traffic until the new bridge reopens by April 2024.

Spotsylvania County

I-95 Southbound Exit 126 Off-Ramp and Route 1 Southbound

A second right turn lane is under construction from the I-95 southbound off-ramp at exit 126 onto Route 1 southbound. Route 1 southbound is being widened from the off-ramp to Southpoint Parkway with an additional turn lane. A second right turn lane is being added from Route 1 southbound to Southpoint Parkway. Traffic islands will be installed along Southpoint Parkway as a safety improvement to allow left turns into driveways but restrict through and left-turning traffic exiting from side streets. Additional right turn lane added to Southpoint Parkway to Route 1 southbound. Project completion in Aug. 2025.

Route 3 and Orange Plank Road

Utility relocation is underway ahead of construction to modify the intersection of Route 3 and Orange Plank Rd. to a new traffic pattern to enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and reduce conflict points. Project completion in spring 2024.

Route 17 (Mills Drive) Overpass Replacement and Widening

Construction started in Dec. 2020 to replace the existing two-lane interstate overpass on Route 17 with a four-lane bridge. Route 17 is being widened to four lanes until just east of the Hospital Boulevard/Germanna Point Drive intersection. A shared-use path, sidewalk, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be added as part of the project. Project completion was scheduled for late Feb. 2024. The project is now anticipated to be completed in May 2024.

Route 208 (Courthouse Road) and Hood Drive

Hood Drive is reduced to a single lane between Route 1 and Route 208 (Courthouse Road), carrying only northbound traffic. Southbound traffic should follow the posted detour along Courthouse Road and Route 1 southbound. New right and left turn lanes are under construction at an entrance to a future U.S. Veterans Health Administration outpatient clinic. Additional turn lanes will be built on northbound Hood Drive approaching Courthouse Road. A raised median on Hood Drive will separate northbound and southbound traffic between Courthouse Road and McGowan Drive. Additional sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be installed at the intersection. Project completion in June 2024.

Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) Widening

Mudd Tavern Road is being widened to four lanes between I-95 and Route 1. A new secondary access route, Route 2092, will be built parallel to Mudd Tavern Road, and will connect with South Roxbury Mill Road and Dan Bell Lane. Project completion in May 2025.

Westmoreland County

Route 658 (Monroe Bay Circle)

Monroe Bay Circle is reduced to a single travel lane with a temporary bridge spanning Monroe Creek. A temporary traffic signal is directing one-way, alternating traffic. The bridge is a temporary measure to maintain traffic flow while a bridge replacement project is advanced.
