After setting a Virginia High School League freshman scoring record with 680 points on the season, James Monroe’ basketball standout Makel Minor was rewarded for his efforts.

Region 3B coaches voted Minor player of the year. James Monroe second-year head coach Chuck Ellis was voted the region’s coach of the year.

Yellow Jackets’ junior guard Michael Edwards was named first-team All-Region 3B, and junior guard Dezaun Robinson was named to the second team.

Minor averaged 23.4 points per game for the Yellow Jackets (23-6), who reached the state tournament for the first time since 2012 and won their first region championship since 1986. James Monroe’s season ended Friday with a loss to Lake Taylor in the Class 3 semifinals.

On the girls’ side, JM freshman Melanie Johnson and sophomore Harmony Jones were named second-team all-region.
