Spotsylvania County School Board calls special meeting

by | Mar 6, 2024 | ALLFFP, Schools & Education, Spotsylvania

The Spotsylvania County School Board will hold a special meeting March 12 at 6 p.m. According to the agenda, the board will immediately go into closed session to discuss a personnel matter and consult with legal counsel.

The School Board voted, 4-2, to terminate Riverbend High School Principal Xavier Downs at its Monday meeting. The fate of Superintendent Mark Taylor, who is on administrative leave, is the most pressing personnel matter in the school division.

Taylor was hired in 2022 under controversial circumstances. Some board members and members of the community believed that Taylor, who had no background in public education, was unqualified for the position. Taylor was also at the center of controversy when 30 library books were removed from the system.

Kelly Guempel is currently serving as interim superintendent.
