An egg-cellent gesture: MWHC donates more than 450 Easter baskets

This Easter, Mary Washington Healthcare aims to spread joy to those in need by donating over 450 Easter baskets to the youth in the Fredericksburg area.

The annual event ensures that vulnerable children in the community receive treat-filled Easter baskets during the holiday. Since its inception, over 5,300 Easter baskets have been distributed throughout Fredericksburg and the surrounding counties.

For the past 11 years, MWHC has partnered with social service organizations in Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline counties to support those in need. Jennifer Maxwell, executive assistant of hospital operations at Stafford Hospital, has been instrumental in coordinating Easter basket drives across various departments during her eight-year tenure.

This year’s goal of 456 Easter baskets was accomplished with the help of Stafford Hospital and the 2300 Fall Hill Avenue location, which collected baskets during morning work hours on March 22.

Rebecca Fizer and Laura Ward of MWHC’s Administrative Professionals of Excellence (APEX) department led the Easter basket collection efforts at the Mary Washington Hospital location.

Reflecting on her six years with the organization, Fizer expressed delight in witnessing the abundant generosity of associates.

“Putting smiles on kids’ faces makes me feel accomplished and grateful. I love supporting the community,” she said.

Ward, who worked as a daycare teacher before joining MWHC 10 months ago, was appreciative of the undertaking.

“It’s truly touching to witness the time and effort that people invest in the baskets,” Ward said.

Philanthropy remains a top priority for the nonprofit year-round, said MWHC public relations coordinator Tamra Wheeler, with similar efforts undertaken during each festive season.

“We don’t just take care of the sick,” Wheeler said. “Our associates are passionate about caring for the community as well.”
