A standoff between Spotsylvania County authorities and a man wanted on two felony charges ended with the 41-year-old dying by suicide Wednesday night, authorities said.

Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office units responded to the 9800 block of Foxton Place attempting to locate the suspect.

He was wanted on two charges of felony rape by force, threat or intimidation and aggravated sexual battery of a victim younger than 13 years of age.

Capt. Charles Carey said negotiators and tactical teams attempted to encourage the man to exit the home peacefully to end the standoff.

After hours of negotiating, authorities decided to enter the home and the man was discovered dead by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The standoff alarmed nearby residents who received an alert telling them to shelter in place.
