Riverbend High School has a new principal.

Veteran educator Chawrdi Elliott’s hiring was approved by the Spotsylvania County School Board Monday night.

Elliott previously served as an assistant principal at Stafford High School. She takes over at Riverbend after the firing of former Principal Xavier Downs, who was dismissed this past winter amid an issue regarding licensure in Virginia.

Elliott has 16 years of secondary education experience. In addition to her role as assistant principal, she served as a math teacher and co-chair of the math department.

She holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Central Oklahoma, a master of education in educational leadership from the University of Mary Washington and is currently pursuing her doctorate of philosophy in educational leadership from Old Dominion University.

Riverbend’s teachers and staff and are invited to meet and greet Elliott May 21 at 2:30 p.m. in the school’s auditorium, according to an email from Spotsylvania Executive Director of Secondary Schools Allen Hicks to school personnel. This upcoming summer, information will be shared with the community about opportunities to engage with Elliott, Spotsylvania Public Schools Director of Communications and Community Engagement Rene Daniels said.
