Free trolley service returns to downtown Fredericksburg this summer

The City of Fredericksburg recently announced the return of the “Around the Town” free trolley service to downtown this summer.

The free, family-friendly trolley ride offers participants a snapshot of downtown on Friday and Saturday evenings between May 31 and Aug. 31. The City has contracted with Trolley Tours of Fredericksburg on the service, which will run Fridays and Saturdays between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. The trolley makes a 20-minute loop of downtown and stops at six locations:

  • Fredericksburg Visitor Center at 706 Caroline Street
  • Intersection of Caroline and William Street
  • Intersection of Princess Anne and Hunter Streets by Carl’s Ice Cream and Mason Dixon Café
  • Canal Quarter near Haley’s Honey Meadery and Red Dragon Brewery
  • William and Barton Streets near Harry’s Downtown and Mellow Mushroom
  • William and Charles Streets near Castiglia’s and Rebellion Bourbon Bar and Kitchen

On the first Friday of each month, additional stops are added for art gallery openings.

Now in its seventh season, the “Around the Town” initiative began as a pilot program in 2018 as part of City Council’s goal of better managing the downtown parking supply while increasing the inventory over time.

The “Around the Town” ride is located near a variety of restaurants, public restrooms, coffee shops, art galleries, museums, parks, and downtown shops as well as close to parking with ample availability on weekend evenings. (You’ll find the City’s downtown public parking map online at FXBGparking.com.) Designed to encourage park-and-ride experiences, the trolley remains free to all riders during these special service hours.

“In 2023, last summer, we had reports of mostly full trolleys during peak hours,” city Tourism Marketing and Communications Manager Danelle Rose said in a news release. “We are excited to add new signs to the trolley stops this year! They will provide better visibility for the hop-on/hop-off stops while offering information about ride times and a QR code for even more information.”

The Fredericksburg Visitor Center is open until 8:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays this summer and is located at 706 Caroline Street. For more information, please visit FXBG.com or contact the Fredericksburg Visitor Center at 540-373-1776.
