A Massaponax High School senior is dead following a shooting early Saturday morning in the 2700 block of McKenzie Lane in Spotsylvania County.

The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office received a call at approximately 3 a.m. regarding an incident in which three individuals allegedly attempted to break into a home in the River Club subdivision by kicking in the back door.

The resident went outside and confronted the alleged attempted intruders as they were coming from the back of the home, shooting two of them, according to the sheriff’s office.

Michael Bosworth Jr., an 18-year-old set to graduate from Massaponax later this month, was shot in the torso and died at a local hospital. A juvenile was grazed with a bullet, treated for minor injuries and released. The third alleged intruder was unharmed.

Massaponax Principal William Lancaster III on Sunday sent a message to the school community informing students and parents of Bosworth’s death. Lancaster said he was “saddened” to share the news and that he reached out to Bosworth’s family to offer support.

Lancaster encouraged parents and guardians to be aware of how their children handle grief stemming from Bosworth’s death. He shared the division’s website, which provides additional mental health resources. Lancaster said that prom will occur on Saturday evening as scheduled. School counselors will be on site to provide support.

“Additionally, when students return to school on Monday, our counseling staff and additional division support team members will be available to assist students and staff,” Lancaster said. “If your child needs support, please contact the school so we can help. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.”

The resident and the alleged attempted intruders were not charged. Capt. Charles Carey of the sheriff’s office said he does not have information on whether any of the three individuals were armed.

“This is an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident,” a press release from the sheriff’s office stated. “Therefore, no charges have been filed at this time.”
