Facilities continue to be a pressing topic in the county. Superintendent Sarah Calveric wants to explore trailers to ease overcrowding but the board of supervisors expressed other ideas at its meeting last month. The school board will discuss short-term and long-term options at this meeting. The short-term plan which include the next three years, feature a potential fourth elementary school, Caroline Middle School expansion, taking care of deferred maintenance and an addition to the transportation building.

The budget that Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed last week includes an increase in the support cap that could result in approximately $500,000 of additional state funding for city schools… FCPS is moving closer to the installation of rooftop solar panels atop Gladys West and Lafayette elementary schools, the new middle school and the Walker-Grant Center; the age of the roofs at Hugh Mercer Elementary and James Monroe High School means those buildings wouldn’t be included in an initial install. On Monday, staff will recommend a partner company for that project.

The King George PTA County Council will present its yearly outstanding educator awards to the following individuals: Sarah Beachy of King George Preschool; Sarah Beth Rodrigues of King George Elementary; Melissa Morrison of Potomac Elementary; Terri Slavin of Sealston Elementary; Anna Elizabeth Tanner of King George Middle; Amber Walde of King George High; and an honorary life membership award to Terri Rinko, the division’s work-based learning coordinator.

The board will meet in closed session to consult with legal counsel pertaining to “actual or probable litigation” involving Amazon Data Services. ADS filed a lawsuit against the board of supervisors on April 24 in King George Circuit Court. A previous board, before three new members came aboard in January 2024, signed a performance agreement with ADS to construct a data center campus in the county. The new board decided it wanted to renegotiate the performance agreement. However, ADS’ position is that the agreement signed by the previous board in 2023 remains valid.

The planning commission will hold a public hearing on zoning amendments to the Agriculture and Accessory Use Domestic Laying Hens ordinance. The Spotsylvania Agricultural and Forestal Advisory Committee recommends a code amendment to present to the board of supervisors to remove zoning in the current ordinance concerning acreage minimums for livestock and crop growing. Additionally, the committee recommends a code amendment exempting the agricultural zoned areas in the chicken coop ordinance and remove the required fees in all cases.

Stafford County
Board of Supervisors meeting, Tuesday, 5 p.m.

The supervisors are scheduled to discuss solar opportunities with the R-Board, and spending $3.1 million in surplus funds on Chromebooks for the schools and $3 million in surplus funds to buy a warehouse on Blackjack Road for the schools. The board also will talk about spending $2.5 million to buy land for the rebuilding of Drew Middle School and $231,444 to renovate Potomac Hills Fire and Rescue to create the EMS training hub.
