Matt Kelly, a longtime city resident and former member of City Council, announced that he will run for the body’s Ward 3 seat in November.
“Since coming to Fredericksburg over 40 years ago I’ve worked, both as a resident and a member of the City Council, to protect the city’s unique historic small-town character, and provide amenities and services to help ensure a good quality of life for ALL who call Fredericksburg home,” Kelly said in a press release.
In November’s election, Kelly will face Susanna Finn, who was appointed in March to serve out the remainder of former Councilor Tim Duffy’s term.
In his campaign announcement, Kelly listed the following accomplishments:
- Worked to place an easement along the river to protect water quality and provide recreational opportunities.
- Played a leading role in establishing a waste-to-energy facility at the landfill and expanded recycling and composting.
- Worked to improve the train station and expand rail service.
- Chaired the committee which drafted the region’s first regional affordable housing plan which was the catalyst for $5 million in funding to the region for affordable housing opportunities.
- Worked on approving and designing an award-winning hotel and parking garage to ensure they complemented the historic character of downtown.
- Strongly supported the construction of a community swimming pool and a multi-use stadium, not only for baseball but also for other entertainment and recreational opportunities.
- Initiated talks and deeply involved in bringing the minor league baseball to our city.
Kelly also criticized the current city council, citing their pursuit of data centers as well as their handling of development projects such as Mary’s Landing.
“The focus of this council is on whatever it takes to make the deal, even if it compromises their constituent’s [sic] quality of life,” he wrote. “This election will determine the city’s vision and how we will ensure resident participation in shaping it. Everyone has something to contribute.
“I will continue to keep residents informed, address questions and concerns, to ensure your voice is heard.”
