The Virginia Department of Transportation and its contractor finished a $2.4 million pedestrian and bicycle connector project in Fredericksburg months ahead of schedule.

Construction began Dec. 3 to extend a paved shared-use path, about 10 feet wide, along the north side of Lafayette Boulevard between Twin Lake Drive and St. Paul Street.

The accessible path has ramps for any users with disabilities and marked crosswalks built where the path intersects with Twin Lake, Springwood Drive, Kensington Place and St. Paul.

New pedestrian signal crossing equipment and pavement markings were installed at the Lafayette and Twin Lake intersection.

Additionally, the project built a paved access point to the Virginia Central Railway Trail from the cul-de-sac of Springwood and installed a bike repair station at Alum Spring Park.

All work was expected to be done this November, but the project contractor, M&F Concrete Inc., finished four months early.

Fredericksburg submitted an application to build the project through Virginia’s SMART SCALE transportation program.
