The Culpeper Police Department says the scammers are at it again. They’re using fake caller IDs (called spoofing) to impersonate Culpeper Police Department officers and pressure you into sending money. Here are some of the tactics:
-
Pretending to be real Culpeper PD officers by name
-
Spoofing CPD’s official phone number to make it look legitimate
-
Claiming you have an active arrest warrant
-
Demanding immediate payment via Bitcoin, gift cards, cash apps, or other untraceable methods
What do do it you get a call: -
1. Don’t Panic.
Scammers rely on fear and urgency. Real law enforcement will NEVER demand money over the phone.
2. Verify the Call.
Hang up and call CPD directly at 540-727-7900. Even if the number or officer’s name seems real — it’s likely a scam.
3. Do Not Share Personal Info.
Never give out your Social Security number, banking info, or send payments to unknown callers.
4. Spread the Word.
Warn friends, neighbors, and loved ones — especially those who may be more vulnerable.
