Stafford County sheriff’s deputies are searching for the driver of a car that struck and killed a pedestrian early Tuesday.

Just before 2 a.m., deputies responded to the area of Richmond Highway and Foreston Woods Drive for a call of a pedestrian struck, the county sheriff’s office said.

When deputies arrived, they discovered a 36-year-old man dead at the scene, sheriff’s spokesman Ryan Wilbur wrote in a news release on the department’s website.

A preliminary investigation revealed the victim was walking northbound on the right shoulder when he was hit by a passing vehicle. The driver then fled the scene, Wilbur wrote.

Evidence at the scene suggested that the fleeing vehicle may have been a white 2018 or 2019 Audi SUV with heavy damage to the right front and right passenger side, he wrote.

Deputies located a suspect vehicle later Tuesday, but they were still looking for a suspect in the incident, the sheriff’s office posted on its Facebook page.

The agency’s Traffic Safety Unit was still investigating Tuesday afternoon. Anyone with information is asked to contact Deputy S.C. Martin at 658-4450.

Later in the morning, at approximately 2:55 p.m. deputies from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 10400 block of Patriot Highway (U.S. Route 1) for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Deputies located an adult male victim who had been struck by a northbound vehicle. Spotsylvania Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The sheriff’s office Traffic Reconstruction Unit also responded to investigate the incident.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office, preliminary results of the investigation found that two males were wearing dark clothing when they attempted to cross the highway. One male stopped, while the other continued walking into the path of oncoming traffic and was struck.

The uninjured male rushed to the vehicle and allegedly assaulted the driver, who remained on the scene and cooperated with law enforcement. The driver later required medical attention after he was injured during the assault. The deceased victim was identified as Quinton Howard, 41, of Spotsylvania. The incident remains under investigation.
