The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents after receiving four reports on Thursday of attempted phone scams. In each case, callers falsely claimed to be supervisors from the Sheriff’s Office and told victims they had federal warrants. The scammers then demanded payment through various methods to supposedly clear the charges.
Authorities say these calls are entirely fraudulent. A Facebook posting says the Sheriff’s Office does not request or accept payment over the phone and will never demand money to resolve legal matters.
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly at 540-672-1234. Ask to speak with a deputy to confirm the legitimacy of any claims.
