Joe Sanders and Brian Henderson each ran for over 100 yards as the Massaponax High School football team topped James Monroe 30-20 for its first win of the season on Friday night.

Sanders answered JM touchdowns with big scoring runs on two occasions in the second half.

After the Yellow Jackets’ Jordon Juggins returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown to give the hosts a 12-10 lead in the third quarter, Sanders raced 21 yards to the end zone to put the Panthers back on top, 16-12.

In the fourth period, JM pulled within 23-20 on a 70-yard scoring pass from Ryan Wolfenbarger to Oneil Oussantidja. Sanders answered with a 44-yard touchdown scamper to seal the victory for Massaponax (1-2).

Sanders finished the night with 119 yards on 11 carries. Henderson had 108 yards on 16 attempts, as the Panthers racked up a total of 331 yards on the ground.

“He’s been a little bit banged up, so we were just playing him on defense kind of sparingly and then when we needed him on offense,” Massaponax head coach Shane Ludden said of Sanders. “I asked him if he was good to go in the second half, and he said, ‘Yeah, I’ve got you.’ The O-line opened some holes, and we were able to lean on him to make those big runs and put the game away there at the end.”

Daylin Dabney added a 45-yard interception return for a score in the fourth quarter.

Kenyon Monroe completed 7 of 12 passes for 105 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Jackets (2-1). Jakhi Hayden was on the receiving end of Monroe’s scoring strike from 14 yards out in the first period.
