More than 130 golfers teed off Monday at Lee’s Hill Golf Club in Spotsylvania for the 5th annual Firefighter Cancer Support Network golf outing. The event raised money and awareness as firefighter cancer rates continue to climb.
Ten firefighters were remembered during the tournament, part of a grim toll showing 40 Virginia firefighters have died of cancer since 2018, with nearly 300 others diagnosed.
Organizers say the outing serves both as a fundraiser and a way to honor those lost while supporting those still fighting. Virginia Director Steve Weissman noted that more firefighters now die from occupational cancer than from any other hazard on the job.
