High school football roundup: Black-Hawks slip by Knights in nondistrict thriller

Aviance Young Jr. made an acrobatic, go-ahead 15-yard touchdown catch with 7:06 to play, and the Brooke Point defense intercepted Spotsylvania’s Braden Hodges three times in the final minutes to preserve a 20-19 nondistrict football win Friday night.

Black-Hawks quarterback Kaiyan Kelly completed 11 of 16 passes for 140 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. His first scoring strike covered 10 yards to Justin Davis, and it gave the visitors a 13-6 lead with 9:24 left in the second quarter.

The Knights answered behind Hodges. He threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Aiden Booth to tie the score at 13 just before halftime, then scampered 15 yards for a touchdown that gave Spotsylvania a 19-13 edge with 8:01 to go in the third period.

Hodges passed for100 yards, but was plagued by four interceptions.

Jaelyn Cox came up with one of those picks and also led Brooke Point’s ground attack with a game-high 116 yards on 16 carries.

Brooke Point (3-1) will open up Commonwealth District play by hosting Riverbend next Friday. Spotsylvania (2-1) kicks off Battlefield District competition with a visit to Culpeper.

Caroline 35, King William 9

The Cavaliers won their third straight game to start the season behind 368 total yards and three touchdowns from senior quarterback Blake Morris.

Morris finished 12 of 16 passing for 309 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 59 yards and a score on five carries.

Morris connected with senior receiver Josiah Davis on an 80-yard bomb on fourth down with 41 seconds left in the first quarter to give the visiting Cavaliers (3-0) a 7-2 lead. Caroline didn’t look back as that play ignited a stretch of 35 unanswered points.

Davis finished with 152 receiving yards. He also hauled in a 42-yard reception that set up Morris’ 1-yard quarterback sneak for a 13-2 lead with 6:03 remaining in the second quarter. After the Cavaliers forced a missed field goal by King William late in the first half, Morris found senior receiver Xavier Pryor (91 receiving yards) for a 68-yard catch and run for a score. The touchdown came with 1 second left before intermission and gave Caroline a 19-2 advantage at the break.

The Cavaliers added two 1-yard plunges from senior running back Tre Coles in the second half.

King William provided the final margin with a 1-yard scoring run by quarterback Jackson Turnage with 3:14 to play.

Caroline will open its Battlefield District slate next Friday at Chancellor.

Massaponax 41, Chancellor 0

The host Panthers exploded for 34 points in the second quarter to bury the Chargers in nondistrict action.

Massaponax quarterback Kenneth Pyatt ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third in the decisive frame. His scoring runs came from 1 and 3 yards out, and he sandwiched them around a 40-yard touchdown strike to Declan Ta’amai.

Daylin Dabney added a 5-yard blocked punt return for a score and Brian Henderson chipped in a 1-yard plunge.

The only score of the second half came on a 28-yard run by A.J. Kay.

Kay and Pyatt paced the Panthers’ 227-yard rushing output with 55 and 53 yards, respectively.

Massaponax (2-2) is on a bye next Friday before kicking off Commonwealth District action at home against Mountain View on Oct. 3. Chancellor (0-3) opens Battlefield District play by hosting Caroline next Friday.

Colonial Forge 42, Oakton 14

The Eagles pulled away in the second half to hand the visiting Cougars their first loss of the season in a nondistrict matchup.

Leading 21-14 at intermission, Forge got touchdown runs from Jaylen Carter (1 yard) and Torie Martin (13 yards) and a 55-yard scoring pass from Brock Brimhall to TaySean Jones to remain unbeaten.

Carter scored touchdowns on three of his four carries in the game, finding pay-dirt on 1- and 2-yard plunges in the first half. Meanwhile, backfield mate Martin racked up 137 yards on 15 attempts.

Brimhall went 9 of 12 for 194 yards and a pair of touchdowns through the air. In addition to his hookup with Jones, he connected with Jeremiah Wise for a 27-yard score in the second quarter.

Oakton (3-1) got both of its touchdowns on long passing plays. Jack Martin found Timmy Volciak for a 54-yard score to give the Cougars an early 7-0 lead in the first period. Martin then threw a 71-yard touchdown strike to Deylen Jones to tie the score at 14 in the second quarter.

Martin completed 18 of 28 passes for 257 yards, but the Eagles’ defense also picked him off twice.

Colonial Forge (4-0) opens up Commonwealth District play with a home showdown against North Stafford (3-1) next Friday.

Mountain View 51, Freedom-Woodbridge 6

The Wildcats routed the host Eagles to wrap-up the nondistrict portion of their schedule.

Mountain View spread the ball around in the win, with five different players finding the end zone.

Amari Collier and Jayden Huger led the way, scoring two touchdowns apiece. Collier rushed for 95 yards and a pair of scores on 12 carries, while Huger recorded four receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown and a 6-yard scoring run.

Bryce Lambert completed 6 of 8 passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns.

Mountain View (2-2) begins its Commonwealth District slate by hosting Stafford next Friday.

Riverbend 81, Albemarle 8

The visiting Bears built a 58-0 halftime edge en route to an easy nondistrict victory.

Riverbend quarterback Ian Shook completed 8 of 9 passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns.

Camden Simmons was on the receiving end of one of Shook’s scoring passes and also ran for a touchdown as well. Shook and Dwayne Stewart also ran for one score each.

Riverbend (4-0) kicks off Commonwealth District competition at Brooke Point next Friday.
