The Caroline High School football team is off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 1987 following a 34-14 road victory over Chancellor Friday night in the Battlefield District opener for both squads.

Cavaliers’ senior quarterback Blake Morris accounted for 276 total yards and five touchdowns for Caroline (4-0, 1-0 Battlefield).

Morris passed for 179 yards and three scores, while rushing for 97 yards and two touchdowns.

Morris connected with younger brother Blair Morris, a sophomore wide receiver, five times for 93 yards. That included a 28-yard scoring strike in the first quarter to propel the Cavaliers to a 7-6 lead.

Blake Morris added a 6-yard run for a 14-6 advantage, and then he found Josiah Davis for an 8-yard touchdown on fourth down with 27 seconds left before intermission.

Caroline led 21-6 at the break, but Chancellor (0-4, 0-1) pulled within 21-14 on a 7-yard run by senior quarterback Logan Hunter (160 passing yards, 2 rushing touchdowns) with 4:11 to play in the third period.

The Cavaliers responded with a 64-yard drive, punctuated by Blake Morris’ 1-yard quarterback sneak for a score. They provided the knockout punch on a 15-yard touchdown strike from Blake Morris to a wide open Dion Coates with 11:17 left in the game. The score was set up by an interception by senior Xavier Pryor.

Caroline returns to action next Friday with a homecoming contest against James Monroe. Chancellor (0-4, 0-1) visits Courtland the same night.

James Monroe 19, Eastern View 14

The Yellow Jackets (3-1, 1-0 Battlefield) won their district opener by holding off Eastern View (1-4, 0-2) behind a stellar defensive effort.

Jordan Juggins returned a fumble 52 yards for a touchdown, while quarterback Kenyon Monroe completed 5-yard touchdown passes to Kamrin Kea and Oneil Oussantidja. Monroe passed for 115 yards. Kea rushed for 78 yards on 15 carries for the Yellow Jackets, who visit Caroline next week in a district showdown.

Courtland 42, King George 14

Tyrik Newman rumbled for 209 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns in the visiting Cougars’ Battlefield District rout of the Foxes.

Not to be outdone, Courtland quarterback Chieftain Watson passed for 121 yards and two scores, both to Grayson Larch.

Larch finished with two receptions for 100 yards.

Courtland (3-1, 1-0) returns home to host district foe Chancellor next Friday. King George (0-4, 0-1) will travel to Spotsylvania the same night.

Spotsylvania 38, Culpeper 33

The Knights rallied from a 27-10 third-quarter deficit to stun the host Blue Devils in the Battlefield District opener for both teams.

Quarterback Braden Hodges started the uprising with a 1-yard touchdown run, then threw a 40-yard scoring strike to Hudson Callahan to pull Spotsylvania within 27-24 entering the final stanza.

Callahan returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown on Culpeper’s next possession, giving the Knights a 31-27 advantage.

Braylon Puller’s 1-yard plunge ultimately sealed the victory for the Knights.

Hodges completed 11 of 17 passes for 217 yards. Callahan had five receptions for 136 yards, and Puller carried the ball 16 times for 117 yards.

Spotsylvania (3-1, 1-0) hosts King George in a district clash next Friday.

Stafford 21, Mountain View 7

Bryce Lambert’s 32-yard touchdown pass to Jaydn Huger pulled the Wildcats within 14-7 at halftime, but they could draw no closer in a Commonwealth District loss to the host Indians.

Huger finished with five receptions for 58 yards for Mountain View (2-3, 0-1), which travels to Massaponax next Friday in district action. Stafford (3-2, 1-0) will welcome Colonial Forge the same night.
