Cavaliers, Cougars take care of business to set up Battlefield showdown

The Caroline High School football team continued its best start in school history with a 22-12 Battlefield District road victory over Spotsylvania Friday night.

Senior quarterback Blake Morris amassed 200 total yards and contributed three touchdowns—two passing and one receiving.

Morris threw his two scoring passes to brother Blair Morris, who recorded four receptions for 57 yards.  The brotherly combo buoyed the Cavaliers (7-0, 4-0 Battlefield) to a 15-12 halftime advantage.

A first-year starter at quarterback, Blake Morris returned to his original position of wide receiver for several plays.  On one of those, he hauled in a 23-yard touchdown strike from freshman quarterback Rashawn Rollins that gave Caroline a 22-12 lead 12 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Senior receiver Xavier Pryor added three catches for 67 yards and recorded an interception from his defensive back position.

The Cavaliers were paced on the ground by senior running back Tre Coles, who rushed for 73 yards on 11 carries.  Junior Dre Coleman added 52 yards on 13 attempts.

The Knights (4-3, 2-2) got touchdown runs from Braden Hodges and Brayden Aguilera in the first half, but nothing more.  The Caroline defense stymied them throughout the second half, including a pivotal goal-line stand in the third period.

The Cavaliers will return to action next Friday with a home showdown against fellow district unbeaten Courtland (6-1, 4-0).  Spotsylvania will visit Chancellor the same night.

Courtland 32, Eastern View 15

The visiting Cougars kept pace with Caroline atop the Battlefield District standings thanks to the two-headed rushing attack of Tyrik Newman and E.J. Flemming.

Newman ran for 125 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, while Flemming racked up a season-high 101 yards and two scores on 15 attempts.

Not to be outdone, Courtland quarterback Chieftain Watson connected on 11 of 19 passes for 166 yards and a pair of touchdowns—one each to Keegan Parker and Ahmari Boxley.

Massaponax 28, Stafford 16

Joe Saunders III ran for 133 yards and three touchdowns as the Panthers topped the host Indians in a Commonwealth District matchup.

Saunders scored on runs of 4, 14 and 6 yards as Massaponax (4-3, 2-1 Commonwealth) amassed 260 yards on the ground. Declan Ta’amai also found the end zone on a 20-yard scamper.

Stafford (3-4, 1-2) scored on a 4-yard run by Clayton Lemke and a 76-yard pass from Brayden Dalton to Josiah Wright.

The Panthers will entertain Brooke Point next Friday, and the Indians will host Riverbend.

James Monroe 27, Chancellor 24

Kenyon Monroe threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets held off visiting Chancellor in Battlefield District action.

Monroe completed 12 of 16 passes, with both of his scoring passes going to Oneil Oussantidja.  He also paced JM (5-2, 3-1) on the ground with a team-high 80 yards on 12 carries.

Oussantidja hauled in five passes for 141 yards, and Jamari Brooks added a pair of touchdown runs to the Jackets’ cause.

James Monroe faces a pivotal road contest with Battlefield foe Culpeper (5-2, 3-1) next week.  The Jackets and Blue Devils are competing for the No. 2 seed in the Region 3B playoffs., with Culpeper holding a slight edge in the power-point rankings entering last week.

Chancellor (0-7, 0-4) will once again seek its first win of the season when it entertains Spotsylvania.

North Stafford 42, Mountain View 16

Kenaz Sullivan had three catches for 110 yards and also intercepted a pass in the host Wolverines’ Commonwealth District rout of the Wildcats.

Kadin Bowens and Alon Lester had one rushing touchdown apiece for North Stafford (6-2, 3-1), and Ontario Washington caught a 47-yard scoring strike from Chase Sullivan.
Bryce Lambert accounted for both of Mountain View’s touchdowns, running for one and throwing a scoring pass to Jaylen Castro.

The Wolverines are on a bye next Friday before hosting rival Stafford on Oct. 31.  The Wildcats (2-6, 0-4) will visit Brooke Point next Friday.
