The school division is working with Empowerhouse and the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB) on bully prevention. The Virginia School Board Association recognizes October as Bullying Prevention Month with spirit days, lessons, morning announcements and more. RACSB has partnered with the division for the past three years. A total of 5,216 students in grades K-5 completed hte second step bullying prevention program.

Planning commission meeting, Thursday, 6 p.m.

The planning commission recently reviewed and discussed text amendments to the subdivision ordinance that are required because of changes to Virginia law that went into effect July 1. Several changes to the code pertain to the role of the planning commission in reviewing and approving subdivision plats. The commission also discussed potential amendments to the requirements for family subdivisions as directed by the board of supervisors. The intent is to reduce opportunities to circumvent requirements of the ordinance.

Months after city council discussed in a work session loosening restrictions on where tattoo parlors and similar establishments are permitted by right, the planning commission is considering a plan to do just that… Commissioners will also discuss tweaks to the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) regarding zoning for day-care uses, which include family day homes, child care centers and adult day care centers.

Fredericksburg Area Metropolitan Planning Organization

Policy Committee meeting, Monday, 6 p.m.

FAMPO, a regional transportation planning body, will hear a presentation on the proposal to put a new road and bridge over the Rappahannock River. Part of the new information members may discuss is the estimated price tag for the project: $290.5 million.

The board will discuss Virginia School Board Association legislative proposals, including assessment and accountability reform. The agenda states: The VSBA supports the establishment of a balanced assessment and accountability system, as defined by local school boards, that utilizes a more complete picture of student learning by providing both measures of achievement (such as the Standards of Learning tests) and state-approved, authentic measures of individualized student growth over time. The VSBA also supports reducing the number of SOL tests to carefully selected grade levels and content areas, which it hopes will lead to reallocation of assessment funds and instructional time.

Board of supervisors and Service Authority Board of Directors meeting, Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.

  • Public hearing on King George Mortuary Service rezoning request
  • Presentation on Caledon Solar

The planning commission voted 4-1 last month to recommend the supervisors deny Caledon Solar, which would be constructed on land owned by County Attorney Sen. Richard Stuart (R-Westmoreland). Commissioner Stanley Palivoda of the James Monroe District cast the lone vote in favor of the project, which will now be presented to the board of supervisors. Stuart and Caledon Solar/TerraForm Power requested a special exception permit to build the solar farm on 215 acres of a 1,431-acre parcel that is located at 12181 Caledon Road and is zoned Agriculture Preservation.

Stafford County

Board of Supervisors meeting, Tuesday, 5 p.m.

The supervisors have a fairly full agenda Tuesday, but the marquee event on the schedule is a joint public hearing on new zoning regulations for data centers. A data center critic told the Free Press that an opposition group plans to “flood” the Government Center with speakers at the hearing.
