After nearly two centuries in an unmarked grave in France, Eliza Monroe Hay — daughter of former President James Monroe — will finally be laid to rest beside her family in Richmond.
The Catholic Diocese of Richmond will hold a reinterment ceremony Thursday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m. at Hollywood Cemetery.
Hay’s remains were returned to the U.S. earlier this year and will be buried in the Monroe family plot. The service is open to the public.
Kathryn Willis of Fredericksburg helped locate her grave in France and has tirelessly worked to bring Eliza home. Scott Harris is Executive Director of University of Mary Washington Museums which include the James Monroe Musuem on Charles Street in Fredericksburg.
