The two Spotsylvania County residents involved in an incident on Partlow Road this past summer had their court hearings continued until February, according to Spotsylvania Commonwealth’s Attorney Ryan Mehaffey.

Elizabeth Wolfrey faces a misdemeanor charge of brandishing a firearm, while Mark Goodman is facing a charge of indecent exposure, also a misdemeanor, after a confrontation with a Black lesbian couple on July 20 that ended when one of the women crashed their vehicle, leading to serious injuries.

The couple, Jamaria Gaskins and Amylah Majors, said they stopped their vehicle on Partlow Road after running over debris. They are now facing a felony charge of obtaining money by false pretense and a misdemeanor charge of filing a false police report.

Gaskins and Majors posted photos online of Wolfrey holding a firearm and Goodman exposing his backside. They also alleged they were chased on a 4-wheeler, leading to the crash but provided no evidence of the chase in the viral social media post about the incident.

They requested $125,000 on GoFundMe.com because of their injuries. They ultimately received $21,131.

They encouraged Mehaffey to investigate the incident as a hate crime — Wolfrey and Goodman are white — but after reviewing the evidence, a special grand jury instead returned with charges against the couple, which also include a charge of reckless driving against Majors.

Wolfrey and Goodman were scheduled to appear in Spotsylvania General District Court on Thursday, but their hearings were continued until Feb. 18. Mehaffey said Gaskins and Majors are out on bond, which was set at $5,000. Their charges are being handled by the Spotsylvania Circuit Court.

The initial case drew the attention of social justice activists across the country. The Spotsylvania NAACP also implored Mehaffey to seek hate crime charges, and held a meeting in August discussing the incident.
