LISTEN: Holiday fire risks rise; Spotsylvania chief outlines precautions

by | Nov 25, 2025 | Police and Fire, Spotsylvania, Ted Schubel

Spotsylvania Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management Chief Jay Cullinan is reminding everyone to stay vigilant in the kitchen during the holiday season. He stresses the importance of deep-frying turkeys only outdoors and well away from structures, and urges families to keep a working fire extinguisher nearby—and know how to use it.

Chief Cullinan also offers Christmas tree safety tips, including keeping live trees watered, checking lights for damage before plugging them in, and making sure trees aren’t placed near heat sources. He says a few simple precautions can prevent many of the fires they see this time of year.
