Visitors to the Fielding Lewis Store at 1200 Caroline Street wait in the cold temperatures to go inside to listen to a story about the history of the store. It was constructed in 1749 and was designed to house, market, and sell merchandise brought to Fredericksburg by John and Fielding Lewis’s international shipping business.

Local historian Tripp Wiggins of the Rappahannock Colonial Heritage Society talks with visitors to the Lewis Store during the 55th Annual Candlelight Tour ‘A Revolutionary Experience in Colonial Fredericksburg’. One story tells how George Washington wrote his mother, Mary Ball Washington, asking her to buy cloth, hose, and thread from Mr. Lewis’ store. He also made other purchases such as shoe buckles, salt, and mirrors for over 25 years.
