Alexis Innis with American Red Cross Blood Services says while 62 percent of the population is eligible to give blood, only about three percent actually donate. She says blood shortages would be largely eliminated if eligible donors gave just once a year. Innis calls blood donation a critical community service, noting that donated blood is needed daily for trauma care, cancer treatments, surgeries, and emergencies. Information on donating and scheduling an appointment is available at redcrossblood.org.
