Sweet spot: Kilwins opens doors to confectionery delights

It’s a feast for the senses, which makes sense given that the Kilwins tagline is “Sweet in Every Sense.”

Sisters Jenna Bowen and Sandra Duff opened the doors to their Kilwins franchise on Caroline Street this week to customers and invited the Fredericksburg Free Press in for a sneak peek.

The sisters, natives of Connecticut, fell in love with the Kilwins brand after a visit to the store in Charlottesville. They were so impressed by the products that they immediately began working to bring it to this region.

Many of the shop’s staples are produced on-site, including fudge, caramel corn and brittle, which are freshly made, sealed, and packaged in-store. For those looking to take dessert home, quarts of ice cream made from Kilwins creameries in Michigan and Ohio are always available, along with custom ice cream cakes.

Ice cream is available all year long, with selections changing seasonally. Fudge offerings will rotate as well. While chocolate, peanut butter, and sea salt caramel fudge will always be available, other flavors like maple walnut may change based on demand. The goal is to discover what becomes “Fredericksburg’s fudge flavor.”

There’s also an emphasis on flexibility. Customers don’t have to commit to a full sundae or a box of candy. Someone working downtown can pop in for a single truffle or a box with one caramel and one dark chocolate treat—just enough to brighten the day. The philosophy is simple: come in, take a break, and let the staff take care of you.

Bowen and Duff’s favorite way to describe Kilwin’s? A 15-minute vacation.

A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for next month and watch for more on Kilwins in our Biz Beat newsletter.
