Fire Chief Mike Jones told City Council the score places Fredericksburg among the top fire protection systems in Virginia, with only 22 communities in the state receiving a Class 2 rating and just nine earning the top Class 1.
Communities are evaluated every ten years based on factors such as fire department staffing and equipment, emergency communications, and the reliability of the local water supply for firefighting.
Fredericksburg previously held a Class 3 rating in 2015.
